Bittersweet Shades of Red

January 2020

Framing personal narratives with elements of psychoanalysis and surrealism, Bittersweet: Shades of Red is the culmination of three bodies of work. I imagined what the settings and characters would look like in my experiences of grief. The three installations consist of The Storyteller, Little Egos Mourning the Blooms and The Entombed Superego. I have learned that bittersweet is more than a taste; it is a feeling encircled by the sweet nostalgia of the past and the bitterness that comes with change. I reflect on how emotions associated with grief, such as anger, hurt, love, and peace, can occur contradictorily and simultaneously and what the story looks like given a body. I investigate ways grief connects and disassociates, obscuring the color field of grief in shades of red.
